Funeral Etiquette and Suggestions

We understand that the loss of a loved one can be difficult, and we strive to make the memorial service as comfortable and respectful as possible for all in attendance.  With that in mind, it's important to be aware of appropriate funeral etiquette to ensure that the service for the deceased and their family is respectful and comfortable for all. These are generalities, and don't necessarily apply to every situation, but here are some key points to keep in mind when attending a funeral or memorial service:

  • Dress Appropriately. Generally speaking, it's appropriate to wear dark, conservative clothing to a funeral or memorial service. Avoid bright colors or casual clothing, and make sure your clothing is clean and pressed.
  • Be Punctual. Do you best to arrive at the funeral or memorial service on time. If you are running late, try to arrive as soon as possible, but wait to enter the service until an appropriate break in the proceedings.
  • Show Respect. Do you best to show proper respect during the service. Stand when others are standing, sit when others are sitting, and avoid talking or making noise during the service. If you are not sure when to stand or sit, simply follow the lead of others.
  • Offer Condolences. After the service, take the time to offer your condolences to the family and friends of the deceased. A simple, heartfelt expression of sympathy can mean a lot to those who are grieving.
  • Follow the Family's Lead. It is important to remember that each family and each individual handles grief differently. If the family wants a quiet, solemn service, respect their wishes. If they want a more celebratory service, participate in that too.
  • If You Can't Attend. If you are unable to attend, it's appropriate to send a sympathy card or make a donation. You can still show your support by sending a sympathy card or making a donation to a charity in memory of the deceased.

Funeral etiquette is ultimately about showing respect and support for the family and friends of the deceased, and remembering that everyone grieves in their own way. By following these guidelines, you can help make the funeral or memorial service a more meaningful and comforting experience for all involved.
